One example of "one size fits all" design is the modern internal combustion engine. While there is currently a movement to incorporate electricity driven, hybrid, or ethanol-based engines for automobiles, for many years, nothing was done to modify the internal combustion engine's reliance on gasoline. The lack of innovation in that field over the last 100 years is greatly burdening our national economy and national security, not to mention the wallets of "Joe the everyman".
